Public hanging in Iran
Iran, which last month executed two people over their role in anti-government protests, will “soon” hang nine more who were convicted in connection with the demonstrations, the country’s judiciary said.
Each of the 11 defendants was “linked to one of the anti- revolution groups,” the state-run Fars news agency cited deputy judiciary head Ebrahim Raisi as saying on Monday in the city of Qom. “They attended the riots aiming for disunity and the regime’s overthrow,” he said.
The first two executions took place on January 28. They followed a crackdown by security forces to quell street protests that began in June, after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The rallies have been the largest anti-government demonstrations since the 1979 revolution that brought Shiite Muslim clerics to power.
