Student Mehdi Arabshahi Has Bypass Operation After Torturous Interrogations in Evin Prison

Student activist Mehdi Arabshahi was operated after having a heart failure. In hospital he received a bypass operation as one of his outer arteries were blocked. Before imprisonment he had no known medical record of heart failure.

Student Activist Mehdi Arabshahi, the secretary of Daftare Tahkim Vahdat, was arrested in December 2009. According to Amir Kabir’s newsletter, Mehdi Arabshahi, a management student at Allameh Tabatabei University, was arrested by security forces today in Laleh Park while Ashura clashes were going on. According to students’ reports, security forces first recognized him and then arrested him in the park. In the last three months of 2009 Abbaas Hakimzadeh and Milad Asadi, other members of the central council of Daftare Tahkim Vahdat, were arrested.

Mehdi Arabshahi was released in March 2010 on a bail of approxiamately $ 200.000. During his stay in prison he was transferred to the hospital several times. According to his family he developed severe heart problems due to torturous interrogations in Evin Prison.

Before imprisonment he had no known medical record of heart failure. After spending three months in solitary confinement in Evin section 240 the pressure to confess became too much for Mehdi Arabshahi.

RSF and Amnesty International issued a joint statement on July 16 expressing concern about the health of such prisoners in Iran. The organizations believe the aim of the denial of medical treatment is to “put pressure on [the prisoners] and their families.”

“We have demanded the immediate release of prisoners of conscience and immediate medical treatment for the sick ones,” Moeni said. He added that such a denial of medical treatment was tantamount to torture.

ادوارنیوز: مهدی عربشاهی دبیر تشکیلات دفتر تحکیم وحدت به دلیل عارضه قلبی به بیمارستان شهید لواسانی منتقل و بستری شد.

این فعال دانشجویی پیش از این در زمان بازداشت موقت در زندان اوین بر اثر فشارهای وارده در بازجویی و انفرادی دچار حمله شدید قلبی شده بود. وی که 6 دی ماه سال گذشته روز عاشورا بازداشت شده بود در طول مدت نزدیک به 3 ماه بازداشت که بیشتر آن در سلول های انفرادی بند 240 اوین گذشت، به شدت زیر فشار بود تا اتهامات وارده از سوی بازجویان پرونده را بپذیرد.

مهدی عربشاهی در آن زمان به دلیل حمله شدید قلبی از سوی مسوولین زندان به بیمارستان قمر بنی هاشم که گفته می شود زیر نظر وزارت اطلاعات است منتقل شد. این در حالی است که وی پیش از آن هیچگونه سابقه بیماری قلبی نداشته است.

مهدی عربشاهی پس از آزادی زیر نظر پزشکان متخصص به معالجه پرداخت و به توصیه آنها در بیمارستان بستری شد.

شایان ذکر است مساله سلامتی زندانیان از مهمترین نگرانی های خانواده زندانیان سیاسی و فعالان حقوق بشر است. بسیاری از بازداشت شدگان یک سال اخیر بر اثر شرایط نامناسب زندان و فشارهای وارده در بازجویی دچار مشکلات جسمی و روحی شده اند.
